What Kinds Of Talk Therapy Are Helpful For Depressed Children/Adolescents?

Question: What kinds of talk therapy are helpful for depressed children/adolescents?

Answer: Yes there are. There's two forms of therapy right now that seem to be quite helpful. One is called cognitive behavioral therapy -- or cognitive therapy for short. The other is called IPT -- or interpersonal psychotherapy. Both of them have support of good research. And so in terms of working with children and adolescents those are the approaches that I tend to advocate.

There are other approaches that haven't received the sort of level of research support that these two have. But these two seem to be safe, effective, and their gains seem to be maintained over time.
