This photograph has helped change the fate of an impoverished family in India. While documenting child illnesses in India, that resulted from the poisonous drinking water from the infamous "1984 Gas Tragedy,' photographer Alex Masi, made this photo of a young girl named Poonam, then 6, enjoying the feel of rain on her face, in front of her old run-down home in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India.

In 2009, Masi's photo of Poonam in the rain won a "Photographers Giving Back Award" in Sweden. Masi was allotted a $5,000 grant to implement a plan that would benefit Poonam and her family. He has since made several trips back to visit them.<B>Poonam, 8, is standing inside her old home, where she lived until June 2011.

Masi worked closely with the family to devise a plan of how best to use the money. Their former home was crumbling and could not have withstood another monsoon season, Masi said, so he helped them fund a new one. They also now have a bathroom and no longer have to struggle to find a private outdoor place to relieve themselves.<P>Poonam, 8, is shown infront of the new home.

Much of the money went to funding schooling for Poonam and her siblings. Masi also was able to buy a sewing machine for Poonam's sister, so that she could learn a trade skill.<P>Poonam, 9, (third from left), celebrates Independence day along with her classmates.

Poonam, 9, sits next to her brother Ravi, 11. The children receive coins from their father Suresh Jatev, 43, in their newly built home in the impoverished Oriya Basti colony, Bhopal, as their mother prepares dinner. Money from Masi's grant also allowed the family to buy a vegetable cart, which Suresh uses to support his family.

The grant money has since run out, but Masi hopes to continue to fund the children's education through sales from his photographic prints from this project and through direct donation. Masi has also set-up an education fund for Poonam and her siblings. He said that the children's education is being supported solely by the sale of prints from the project and through donations to: <a href="http://poonam.alexmasi.co.uk/-prints-for-education.html" target="external">"Poonam's Tale of Hope in Bhopal".</a>

Masi' hopes to continue to be able to help Poonam and her siblings stay in school by continuing to document her life and raise funds to help them, "Visit after visit, I intend to witness her blossoming into a teenager, an emancipated woman, and later into a loving wife and mother."
