Transcript for President Obama Takes Press Through Visual Journey in Correspondents' Roast
I'd like to introduce. The president of the United States. How -- like my new entrance music. It. Rush Limbaugh warned you about -- second term baby. -- -- -- -- Things around here a little bit. Actually my Brothers. There were a little worried about the new ramp entrance music. They are a little more traditional. They suggested that I should start with some jokes at my own expense. Just take myself down a -- I was like -- after Bourne had years. How many -- are -- left. I want to thank the White House correspondents -- you're doing an outstanding job. We are. Grateful for. -- -- -- -- That's all the dignitaries were here everybody. On the -- I especially want let's say thank you -- Ray Odierno who does outstanding service on back. -- all our men and women in uniform every single day. Then of course. Are extraordinary First Lady Michelle Obama. Everybody loves Michelle. She's on the cover -- High poll numbers but don't worry I recently got my own magazine cover. I get it. He's -- -- -- look in the mirror and I have to admit. Another strapping young Muslim socialist -- used to -- Time passes. -- -- And yet. Even after all this time I still make. Rookie mistakes. Like -- out in California where the fund raiser having -- -- time. I happen to mention the -- embarrasses the best looking attorney general in the country. As you might imagine. I got trouble when I got back home. Who knew Eric Holder was so sensitive. And then there's -- -- role. We're just supposed to be just advice on event with the kids I -- on the basketball court. Took -- -- two shots. Made to -- That's right. Two hit. Twenty -- The executive. It is an MB -- ask what's your secret. So. Yes maybe I have lost a step. But some things are beyond my control. For example this whole controversy about -- going to Cuba. It's unbelievable. I've got 99 problems and -- Jay -- want. That's another -- reference I don't. -- Of course -- -- got plenty of advice. Maureen -- -- I could solve all my proms if I were just more like Michael Douglas. In the American press. And I know Michaels here tonight. Michael what's -- secret meant. Couldn't leave me you're an actor in. Aaron Sorkin not a liberal -- -- thing. I could have something to do it. -- that maybe that's something else. I recognize that this job can take a -- along. I understand second term need a burst of new energy. Try some new things and then my team and I talked about it we're won't try anything so we borrowed one of Michelle strict us. I thought this looked pretty good. Good. No -- Anyway. I want to give a shout out to our. The -- Conan O'Brien. -- just talking. And I understand -- -- correspondent sources was considered -- for this -- there were faced with that age old of the old dilemma view it. Offered to him now or wait. For five years and then give -- to Jimmy Fallon. -- -- -- -- I love them. And of course the white house press -- is here. I know CNN has taken some not slightly but the fact -- I admire their commitment to cover all sides of the story. Just in case one of them happens to be accurate. So my former advisors have switched over to you. The dark side. For example David Axelrod now works for MSNBC. Much -- to -- cents MSNBC used to work for David Axelrod. The History Channel is not here. I guess they're embarrassed about the whole Obama is a double play. Of course that never -- Fox News from showing up. -- They actually -- the comparison was not -- To Satan. But the problem is is that the the media landscape is changing so rapidly. You can't keep up what. I remember when -- -- was just something I -- college around 2 AM. Recently though I found a new favorite source for political news these guys are great I think everybody here should check it out. They tell elected as it's called White House not -- I can I get enough of it. Back tears. I really do respect the press I recognize that the press and I have different jobs to do. My job is to be president. Your job is to keep me humble. Frankly I think I'm doing my job better and. The part of the problem is everybody. He is so cynical and we're constantly. Beating cynicism suspicion conspiracies. Remember a few months ago my administration put out a photograph of me going skeet shooting at Camp David -- -- that. And quite a number of people insisted that this has been photo -- but. Tonight -- so -- confessed. You're right. -- can we show them the actual photo. We were just trying to tone -- battle that. -- is an awesome day. There are other new players in the media landscape is well -- super pacs. The development Sheldon Adelson spent 100 million dollars of his own money -- on negative. You've got -- really dislike me. To spend -- -- -- money. -- -- -- You could buy an island and call it. No Obama for that kind of money. -- would have been better off offering me. A hundred million dollars to drop out of the race. I -- I would've taken it. But I thought about it. Michelle would have taken. -- have don't. And -- Republicans are still sorting out what happened in 2012. But. One thing they all agree on is they need to do a better job reaching out to minors. And then -- call -- self center. But I can think of one minority they could start work. -- They never. -- -- as a trial run. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Come to them. Recently had better that's been well publicized dinner with a number -- via -- Republican senators. And on -- do it wasn't easy I proposed a toast. -- died in committee. Of course and even after O'Donnell -- some folks still don't. Don't think I've spent enough time with congress. Want to get a drink with Mitch McConnell -- -- Really. Why don't you get a drink what Mitch McConnell. -- -- -- I get frustrated sometimes. I am not giving up. In fact I'm taking. My charm offensive on the road. The Texas barbecue would -- crews. Kentucky bluegrass concert -- Rand Paul. And a book burning -- Michelle Bachmann. My charm offensive has. Help me learn some. Interesting things about what's going on in congress. It turns out absolutely nothing. But the point of my charm offensive. It's simple we need to make progress on some important issues. Take the -- Republicans fell in love with -- -- And now they can't stop talking about how much they hated. Like were trapped in Taylor Swift -- One senator who have reached across the -- recently as Marco Rubio. But I don't know about 4016. I mean the guy has not even finished a single term. In the senate defense -- rated -- president. These days. Hi I'm -- run my last campaign. On Thursday. As -- mentioned I went to -- Opening of the bush presidential library in Dallas it was wonderful event and that inspired me to get started on my own legacy. Which will actually begin. By. Building. Another. Edifice right next to bush -- can -- -- that puts. I'm also -- work on plans for the Obama library and some have suggested that we put it in my birthplace but I'd rather keep in the United States. Could anybody not -- that don't come. Children's. Only Gallup. -- Dick Morris. Now speaking of presence in the legacies I want to acknowledge. A wonderful friend Steven Spielberg and Daniel Day-Lewis who -- here tonight. We had its -- screening of the most recent film Lincoln which was an extraordinary film. I am a little nervous though about Stevens. Next project I saw behind the scenes look on HBO. Well let's just check it out won't take. Well house -- -- -- was a success and as I was thinking about what to do next. Did in the middle and I haven't gotten -- Obama. I think guys are regulated so why -- -- great -- play or wrong that was the job I -- who is really don't know. We never got transcripts and it's like so you can diet can really become -- tomorrow. And as it turns out the answer was right for -- Characters Hawkeye from last. We can dilute your getting T -- Abraham Lincoln and Lincoln. You know what -- -- Historically Obama and yeah. You'll find it's. Well -- Let me be clear. -- -- -- -- The -- we had apparently Obama me against -- And I think we've gotten pretty terrific performance. Working with a list look there is intimidated. But he makes it any wonder -- I definitely July. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Remarkable transformation. -- Sound like good morning. There Groucho Marx once said. And then. Senator crews that's Groucho -- -- call that's the other. Groucho -- once told an audience. Before I speak. I have something important to -- And along those same -- -- close on more serious note. Obviously there's been no shortage of news to cover over these past few weeks. And these have been some very hard -- -- for too many of our citizens. Even as we together tonight are our thoughts are not far from the people of Boston. And the people west Texas. And their families in the midwest were coping with some terrible -- so we've. Had some difficult days. But. Even when the days seem -- us. We have seen humanity. Shine that and it's brought us. We've seen first responders -- National Guard who dashed into danger. Law enforcement officers who lived -- to serve. And protect. And every day Americans who were opening their homes and their hearts to perfect strangers. And we also saw. Journalists of their best. Especially those who took the time to -- upstream through the torrent of digital rumored to chase down leads and verify facts -- Painstakingly. Put the pieces together to inform and to educate and tell stories. That demanded to be told. If anyone wonders for example whether newspapers -- a thing of the past all you need to do was to pick up or log on to papers like the Boston goal. When there. When their communities. And the wider world needed them most they were there. Making sense of the events that. Might at first blush seem beyond our comprehension and that's what great journalism is. And that's what -- journalists do and that's why for example Pete Williams new nickname around it. NBC newsroom is big -- And in these past few weeks. As I've got a chance to meet many of the first responders the police officers and volunteers. -- raced to help when hardship hits. I was reminded. As I'm always reminded when I mean our men and women in uniform. Whether there in the war theater here back home -- Walter Reed. Bethesda. I'm reminded all -- spokesman onto it to be honored. They don't do it to be celebrated. They do it because they love their families and they love their neighborhoods. And they love their country. And so these men and women should inspire all of us in this world. To live up to those same standards. To be worthy of their trust. To do our jobs. With the same fidelity. And the same integrity. And the same sense of purpose. And the same love of country. Because if there were only focused on profits or ratings or colts. There were contributing to the cynicism that so many people feel right now. And console. Those of us in this room tonight. We are incredibly lucky. And the fact -- we can do better. All of us. Those of us in public office those of us in the press. Those in. -- produce entertainment for our kids those with power those with influence. All of us including myself we can strive. To value those things that I suspect led most of us to do the work that we do in the first place. Because we believed in something. That was true. And we believe in circles. In the idea that we can have a lasting positive impact on the lives of the people around us. -- or obligation. That's the task we should gladly embrace on behalf of all those folks. -- -- office. I'm have this country that's given us so much so thank you all to the White House correspond for the great work you do god bless you all -- -- side --
