DORAL, Fla. -- Sergio Garcia must know by now to stock his bag with extra golf balls when venturing onto the Blue Monster course at Doral. On Friday, for the second time in two years, Garcia deposited a couple into a hazard, this time making a 9 on the par-5 10th hole.
It wasn't as bad as the final round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Trump National Doral in 2012, when Garcia made a 12 at the par-4 third hole. After hitting his tee shot into the water that day, Garcia dropped in front of the hazard and hit three more balls into it before hitting his ninth shot over the green, chipping on and then two-putting for an octuple-bogey.
On Friday, beginning his second round on the windswept course, Garcia knocked two tee shots into the water that runs the length of the par-5 10th. After hitting his fifth shot in play, he put his sixth into the fairway, then his seventh on the green and then two-putted. He finished with a 4-over 76.
Earlier, during the completion of his first round, Garcia hit an approach shot out of a fairway bunker at the 16th hole that hit a corporate tent and rebounded over the back into a water hazard. He had to take a penalty drop that led to a triple-bogey 7.
Strong winds were causing problems for most everyone. The wind was blowing at 15-20 mph with gusts up to 30. Phil Mickelson made three straight double-bogeys, hitting into the water at the third and fourth holes in the second round.
