The blizzard caused airlines to cancel 5,368 flights this week, with about 1,756 flights canclled so far Saturday.

New York's John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia airports are expected to resume passenger flights as early as 9 a.m. Saturday.

Flights from Newark Liberty International Airport are not expected to fully resume until the noon due to runways that had to be shut down overnight as a result of heavy snow.

Amtrak canceled service on its New York-Boston Service line Saturday as crews clear tracks of snow and downed trees. However, Amtrak is running service between New York and Washington, D.C.

At New York's Penn station, stranded travelers banded together as they waited for train service to be reinstated.

"We all met when we were getting off the train, when we realized we're not going any further because all the trains have been canceled," said Donna Stash. "We've been hanging out together in the waiting room. Keeping an eye out on each other."
