Reporter: Within seconds, a warm evening at the shix park last night turned into a nightmare. We have a total of ten adults and the one 3-year-old. Reporter: That number would grow to 13 people shot and wounded, the 3-year-old little deontae howard shot in the face but expected to survive after a group targeting rival gang members opened fire on this crowded basketball court, with a military style assault rifle. The pain is becoming all too familiar for little deontae's grandmother who just buried her son, killed by gun violence on monday. It got to stop. Y'all hurt innocent people. Kids. Thank you. It's the same frustration expressed by the community last october when diane hosted a special summit on chicago violence. Go behind a couple bushes, I'll bet there are guns there. Reporter: In chicago alone more than 1300 shooting incidents, and nearly 300 homicides, and that's actually down 20% from last year. The city's top cop today angry and calling on something to change. Illegal guns drive violence. And military type weapons, like the one we believe to have been used in this shooting, belong on a battlefield. Reporter: Across the country nearly 9,000 people were killed with a gun last year, those living on some of chicago's toughest streets say getting an illegal gun is as easy as buying candy. You go get a gun, he could get a gun. Receive father michael says it should be treated like the shooting at the navy yard on monday or any tragedy. America has to be as angry about 13 people shot on a basketball court last night as they were 12 people shot and some killed in a navy yard in d.C. Reporter: And diane, tonight, unlike many of these cases, police say witnesses are cooperating, and investigators are questioning several people in connection with the shooting here on the court.
