Word this evening a well-known pastor asked his church for prayers after family tragedy. Pastor rick warren revealing that despite the best medicine and prayer his 27-year-old son has died of an apparent suicide. Here is reena ninan. Reporter: He's the pastor who brought us the best-selling book "the purpose driven life." The founding pastor of the saddleback church in southern california. Tonight, the warren family is mourning the death of their 27-year-old son matthew taken in the pastor's own words, quote, in aentary wave of despair. Suicide. In a letter to congregation, he described him as incredibly, kind, gentle and compassionate man, and added he struggled with birth from mental illness, dark holes of depression and even suicidal thoughts. He and his wife just spent the evening with their son, within minutes an outpouring of condolences to warren's family. Pastor jakes tweeting "my heart is broken over the sad news of rick warren and kay warren losing their son today. Please keep them in prayer."
