March 27, 2006 — -- With her new single, "Hips Don't Lie," Shakira is once again steaming up TV sets and airwaves across the United States.

On the eve of her yearlong world tour, the 29-year-old Colombia-born singer sat down with "20/20's" Chris Connelly to discuss her public passions, her behind-the-scenes struggles, and the part of her body that keeps her music so sensationally exciting.

"I need to feel my music in a very physical way. I always say to my band, 'Hey, guys, that song is not working out. My hips, do you see? Do you see 'em moving? Do you see 'em shaking? It's not working out. So let's put a little more energy onto it,'" she told Connelly.

And it seems her hips really don't lie when it comes to making popular music. She has already sold more than 30 million albums worldwide in Spanish and in English. This week, she re-releases her latest album, "Oral Fixation Vol. 2," which includes new tracks.

The two albums she released last year, one in Spanish and the other in English, each debuted in the Top 5 on the album charts. And it looks like it will be the summer of Shakira as she prepares for her world tour, which she'll launch in Spain in June.

But, there's a lot more to Shakira than swiveling hips. Unlike many pop stars, she writes her own songs, produces her own records, and even puts on her own makeup. "I like to be the captain of my own ship." Shakira tells Connelly.

Tune in to "20/20" Friday night at 10 as Connelly gets an intimate look at Shakira's extraordinary rise from an obscure port town in South America to the exclusive ranks of international stardom.
