Kati was a 21-year-old college student in Seattle when she met 26-year-old James Kim during a road trip with friends though Northern California. They married in Las Vegas in 1999. "He was the cutest thing I'd ever seen in my entire life! We got matching tattoos, and that was pretty much how we met. We were inseparable after that," Kati said.

James Kim holds Sabine, the younger of the Kims' two daughters. James Kim was a technology reporter for CNet while Kati Kim managed two small shops in San Francisco.

"I think in a lot of ways it was a very traditional, sort of old-fashioned relationship. He really was just an incredible husband, and I think it just gave him great pleasure to just to take care of me," Kati Kim said.

After spending Thanksgiving in Seattle, the Kims – husband James, wife Kati and their two young daughters, Penelope, 4, and Sabine, 7 months -- headed toward, Portland, Ore. Facing a long drive, Kati suggested the family stop in the town of Roseberg for a meal. James snapped this photo from outside the restaurant window -- which turned out to be a portrait of the family's last supper together.

The ill-fated Portland trip wasn't the Kims' first time hitting the road as a family. "We were always going on road trips with the girls, and we tried to just include them in everything that we did," Kati Kim said.

A wrong turn during a blizzard left the family lost in the Oregon mountains. After five nights, the Kims had run out of gas and everyone was suffering from frostbite. James Kim eventually left the car to find help. Meanwhile, a massive search for the Kims had begun. In addition to search-and-rescue volunteers, James Kim's father commissioned three helicopters and a search team of 25 people.

Noah Pugsley, pictured above, a cell phone engineer, and his colleague managed to track the location of the Kims' last cell phone call. But their initial offer to help authorities fell on deaf ears and privacy rule obstacles kept the vital information from rescuers for 24 hours.

A volunteer helicopter pilot spotted the family's car after they'd been missing for nine days. This is one of the first images of the stranded car.
