January Shopping Deals: Deep Discounts on Outerwear, TVs, Exercise Gear
January offers many deep shopping discounts.
— -- After a busy holiday shopping season, there are even more deals to be had right now.
In fact, outerwear and exercise equipment are among the products that will have their deepest discounts in January.
Consumer Reports’ Mandy Walker told ABC News that people can find discounts of between 20 and 50 percent, or even more, if they shop really carefully.
One of the best January markdowns is winter wear. It’s on sale at the Gap for up to 75 percent off. Shoppers will also get $25 in coupons for every $50 that they spend.
At Macy’s, shoppers can also find deep discounts on outerwear for the entire family. For example, a Tommy Hilfiger coat with fur trim that was originally $225 was being offered for $89.99. A Michael Kors down coat that was originally $250 was discounted to $99.
For the home, people can stock up on bedding for less, Walker said.
“If you want to look for sales on sheets … you can find discounts of 20, 30 percent and more,” she said.
Electronics, too, can be had for less. At Best Buy, a flat screen TV was marked down by 25 percent and fitness equipment was 40 percent off at Target.
For anyone who made a New Year’s resolution to stay healthy, this is a good time to shop.
“It absolutely is because a lot of exercising equipment is on sale,” Walker said. “Ellipticals and treadmills in particular are on their deepest discounts all year in January."
Not everything will be a great buy this month. Humidifiers will have their deepest discounts in February, and consumers are advised to wait until April to spring for a new laptop. May brings the biggest markdowns of the year -- up to 50 percent off -- on digital cameras and mattresses.
“Sometimes there's emergencies but a lot of sales still go by the calendar, so if you can time your purchases you can get a great deal,” Walker said.
