April 24, 2014 -- When Angie Everhart got engaged to entrepreneur Carl Ferro on Tuesday night, she didn't see it coming, but she's known for some time that he was "the one."

"I never thought I’d get married again because my last marriage scarred me from marriage and men," she told ABC News. "This man really brought faith back into my life for marriage and men. There was no doubt whatsoever [that we'd get married]. It was just a matter of when."

Ferro, the creator of Sunfare nutritional meal plans, popped the question to Everhart, who is now hard at work on a new TV show, on their second year anniversary, in the very spot where they shared their first kiss -- an elevator at the Redbury hotel. After a sushi dinner, the couple headed to the Redbury for a night cap, and as they stepped into the elevator Ferro, who had stashed the more than 4.5 carat diamond ring in his sock, got down on one knee.

"I was like 'You're going to propose to me in an elevator?!'" Everhart, 44, said with a laugh. "I didn't realize!"

For the couple, who met after Everhart tried one of Sunfare's cleanse programs, the model's battle with thyroid cancer last year solidified their bond.

"You realize who people are when you go through life or death circumstances, and Carl has proven himself a thousand-fold to me," she said.

"I had to get into an argument with her mom [in the hospital] because I said, 'One person's staying and that's me,'" added Ferro, who called Everhart his "ultimate" woman. "I love her and it’s my turn. We take care of each other."

Ferro added that while the couple is in no rush to plan a wedding ("We're gonna be here for another 30 or 40 years together!" he said), her 4-year-old son and his 8-year-old daughter are already acting like siblings. In fact, he said, they're already referring to each other as "brother" and "sister."

"Oh my God, that’s the best part about it!" Ferro said. "It's the perfect California blended family."
