Nov. 20, 2013 -- Chris Brown has avoided jail time.

The singer, 24, appeared in court today for a probation hearing stemming from his 2009 assault on Rihanna, his first court appearance in about a month.

During the six-minute appearance, Brown, who held hands with girlfriend Karrueche Tran, was ordered to spend 90 days in a residential treatment facility, to complete 24 hours a week of community labor and to take prescription medication. He is also subject to drug testing and is forbidden from leaving Los Angeles, unless it's to attend a court hearing in Washington, D.C.

Brown and his bodyguard were jailed and arraigned on misdemeanor assault last month after they allegedly attacked a young man in Washington, D.C. Both pleaded not guilty and are due back in court Nov. 25.

After the arrest, Brown entered rehab.

"His goal is to gain focus and insight into his past and recent behavior, enabling him to continue the pursuit of his life and his career from a healthier vantage point," his rep told ABC News at the time.

He left the facility last week.

The judge today also requested a report of the D.C. incident to determine whether a probation violation occurred. His next L.A. hearing will be Dec. 16.
