'Game of Thrones' Recap: The Very Dramatic Season Finale

June 16, 2014 -- The bodies piled up in the season finale of "Game of Thrones," but Tyrion Lannister's wasn't one of them.

Sentenced by his father Tywin Lannister to die for poisoning his nephew, King Joffrey -- a crime he didn't commit -- Tyrion had lost his last chance for freedom after Prince Oberyn, his champion, was killed during trial by combat. It seemed he was destined to be executed, but then his brother Jamie stepped in. Under cover of night, Jamie sneaked into Tyrion's cell and freed him. But instead of rushing away to a waiting ship, which Jaime and Varys had arranged, Tyrion went to his father's bedroom, seeking revenge. Instead, he found his ex-girlfriend Shae -- who'd spouted a pack of lies about him at his trial -- in his father's bed.

When Shae spotted Tyrion, she grabbed a knife and tried to kill him, and after a struggle, he choked her to death with her own necklace. "Sorry," he whispered. Then, he grabbed a crossbow off the wall and went looking for his father, who he found sitting on the toilet.

Caught with his pants down, literally, Tywin attempted to talk Tyrion down, saying he'd never really execute him because he was his son. But when he referred to Shae as a "whore," Tyrion shot his dad point blank with an arrow. When an incredulous Tywin sputtered, "You shot me. You're no son of mine!" Tyrion replied, "I am your son. I have always been your son." He then shot Tywin again, leaving his dead body in the privy, and made his escape to the ship. Happy Father's Day, Twyin.

Here's a quick look at what else happened on the finale:

--At the Wall, Jon Snow was trying to negotiate with Mance Rayder, the leader of the Wildlings, when Stannis Baratheon and his army showed up, took Mance prisoner and returned with him to Castle Black.

--Brienne and Podrick came across the Hound and Arya. When Brienne realized who Arya was, she said she'd sworn to her mother that she'd bring her to safety, but the Hound wouldn't let her go. Brienne and the Hound had a fierce battle, which she won; the Hound was mortally wounded. Arya stayed with him for a bit, but refused to kill him cleanly. Instead, she left him to die, went to a port and, using the coin that Jaqen H'ghar had given her, got free passage to the city of Braavos, across the sea.

--Daenerys was horrified to learn that one of her dragons had accidentally killed the 3-year-old daughter of one of her subjects. While she was unable to locate Drogon, the dragon that did it, she tearfully chained up her other two dragons so they couldn't hurt anybody else.

--Before Tyrion killed Tywin, Cersei told her father that she refused to marry Loras Tyrell, as he'd ordered her to do. She told him that to avoid having to do it, she'd tell everyone the truth: that she and Jaime were lovers and her children were bastards and the product of incest. She then told Jaime that she'd told Tywin the truth, and the two had sex on a nearby table.

--Bran, Hodor, Jojen and Meera reached the tree they'd been searching for, but Jojen was killed by evil skeleton creatures. They were whisked to safety by a childlike being, and under the tree, they encountered an old man who told Bran that he'd never walk again, but that he'd "fly."
