— -- A 52-year-old British Columbia resident has been arrested and police have recommended a charge of intimidation after he allegedly struck actor Ryan Reynolds with his car last week in downtown Vancouver, authorities said.

The man, a photographer, was released on Monday morning after police investigated the incident over the weekend, coming to the conclusion to recommend a charge to the Crown Counsel of intimidation, Constable Brian Montague of the Vancouver Police Department told ABC News.

The man, who has not been identified, hasn't been charged yet, but is due back in court on April 28, police said.

Montague said he expects prosecutors to decide whether to charge him "sooner than later," but definitely between now and April 28.

The police investigation started out as a hit-and-run, but after interviews, the department felt intimidation was more appropriate.

"It fits the scenario with the actor-photographer-celebrity situation," Montague said.

Intimidation fits in situations where someone is consistently following a person or watching where they reside, along with other infractions, police said.

Of the incident, Reynolds' rep told ABC News that, "While walking, Ryan was struck by a paparazzi driving a car through an underground parking garage. The man fled the scene. Ryan is okay."

A police press release adds, "The victim was approached by a photographer in the secured underground parking lot at the hotel. During the confrontation, the driver struck the victim with his car as he fled the lot. There were no significant injuries sustained as a result of the contact."

The Crown Counsel, if they decide to charge the man, can either chose an indictable offense, which would be the American equivalent of a felony or summary conviction, the equivalent of a misdemeanor. If charged and found guilty of an indictable offense, the maximum penalty is five years behind bars. If found guilty of a summary conviction, he could get six months in jail.

There's no word if the man has obtained a lawyer, but Montague said it's his understanding he spoke to one.

Reynolds was in Vancouver shooting his new movie "Deadpool."
