— -- Melissa Rivers says her mother Joan would have been "overwhelmed" by the love people have sent the family's way after the comedian's death on Sept. 4 at the age of 81.

The comedian's iconic life was celebrated with touching service just over a week ago, and for the first time since then, Melissa is speaking out about her loss.

"As my son Cooper and I mourn the loss of my mother, we want to thank everyone for the beautiful cards and flowers conveying heartfelt messages and condolences, which continue to arrive from around the world and through social media," she wrote on her Who Say account.

She continued, "My mother would have been overwhelmed by the scope and depth of the love that people have expressed for her. It is certainly helping to lift our spirits during this time ... We are forever grateful for your kindness and support in continuing to honor my mother’s legacy, and for remembering the joy and laughter that she brought to so many."

Joan Rivers arrived at a local New York City hospital on Aug. 28 following a cardiac arrest she suffered during a procedure at Yorkville Endoscopy.

After spending a week at Mount Sinai Hospital, Rivers' death was announced when Melissa released a statement, saying, "It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers."
