Scaffolding Falls at Oscars

L O S  A N G E L E S, March 22 -- Scaffolding erected along the red carpet atthe Shrine Auditorium for coverage of Sunday's Academy Awardscollapsed today, injuring five people, one critically.

The scaffolding was the type commonly used to hold spotlights.The mangled structure fell onto the red carpet that will be used bycelebrities as they enter the auditorium for the awards ceremony.

The scaffolding stood 20 feet and just gave way, said FireDepartment spokesman Bob Collis. Division of Occupational Safetyand Health inspectors were called and will determine what happened,he said.

One person was critically injured, one seriously, one had minorto serious injuries and two had minor injuries, Collis said.

They were taken to two area hospitals.
