— -- Actor Scott Speedman, the former "Felicity" star, is starring alongside Ellen Barkin in the new drama "Animal Kingdom" -- a drama that focuses on a crime family that funds its lavish lifestyle with elaborate robberies.

Speedman, 40, plays Baz, a brother in the dysfunctional family and “the brains behind the crime.”

“But what’s interesting for me about playing this part is at first, you think he’s the good brother, the level-headed one, but as the show progresses you find out he’s not level headed at all,” he explained on "Good Morning America" today. “That’s what great about what the writers are doing on this show. They’re sort of flipping the audience’s perception of each character.”

The matriarch of the show, Smurf, played by Barkin, loves her four sons, but in a bit of a twisted way.

“Boundaries, we don’t have a lot of those in this family,” said Speedman. “She sort of oversteps them. We’re a very isolated family. We just grew up this way, and she’s not afraid to show affection. Let’s just put it that way.”

With so many compelling, twisted television dramas currently on air, Speedman says “Animal Kingdom” sets itself apart because “it’s a very edgy, cool show, but it’s very commercial too, so that’s exciting."
