His superpowers and do-good demeanor have made Superman a pop culture icon for 75 years. Now that rippling red cape is back in a new Superman epic, "Man of Steel," which premieres on June 14, 2013. "Nightline" sat down with several members of the cast and got a behind-the-scenes look at some of the film's costumes and props.

Behold, the suit. Also shown are Clark Kent and Kryptonian costumes. The new movie offers a different twist on the Superman tale. Instead of Superman living among us mortals, "Man of Steel" goes back to Superman's origins on the planet Krypton and his Earth-y upbringing as Clark Kent, setting him up for a serious identity crisis.

Urged as a child to conceal his powers, the pre-Superman Clark Kent is a drifter. "I think it's the thing that's often sort of overlooked about Superman is that he is an alien, he's from another world entirely," said film director Zack Snyder. "He wants the acceptance of his adoptive world. That's really the journey that he's on, is to find, like, what is the why of him on this planet."

Henry Cavill (left),the 30-year-old, English actor, is the face of Superman in "Man of Steel." When director Zack Snyder called and told him he got the part, Cavill said he was stunned at first. "I thought, 'Oh my goodness. I'm Superman,'" he told ABC's Chris Connelly. "I didn't do anything for about five minutes, just going, 'I don't quite know what to do with myself. Did that really happen?'"

Shown here are Krytonian costumes. When Krypton's General Zod invades Earth and puts Clark Kent in the interplanetary crosshairs, the Superman suit goes on and the battle begins. "These fight sequences are epic," said actor Michael Shannon, who plays General Zod. "We would come in and be like, 'OK, we're doing the punch.' I used to spend 12 hours getting the punch right."

Amy Adams, shown here, plays Lois Lane, the hard-charging journalist drawn to Clark Kent, but make no mistakes. She is no damsel in distress. "I definitely get myself in situations which require saving," Adams said. "But I think she is a part of the solution."

Shown here is Lois Lane's reporter ID badge. In order to save Lois, and the rest of Earth, Cavil said he trained hard to get his body into superhero shape, one that would be worthy of Superman's suit. "It's basically a Spandex outfit and I just thought, 'There's no way I'm getting this role,'" Cavill said. "You can act as hard as you want, but you can't act not fat."

"Superman has always been the best and greatest superhero because he's kind of the most purest mythology of what a superhero is," said 'Man of Steel' director Zack Snyder.
