Talhotblond told Thomas Montgomery her name was Jessi, and said she was a softball-playing high school senior from West Virginia. Only much later did it emerge that she was really a middle-aged woman named Mary Shieler. Photos she sent Montgomery were of her daughter. For the movie, Mary Shieler's name was changed to Beth Brooks, played by Molly Hagan, pictured here.

At the beginning of their flirtation, "Jessi" sent Thomas Montgomery sexy photos she said were of her. In exchange, he sent her this photo of him from Marine boot camp. The picture was 30 years out of date. Montgomery's screen name, Marinesniper, was a nostalgic harkening back to the six years he spent in the military as a young man.
