May 30 -- CHICAGO (Reuters) Tony Award-winning actress Julie Harris is in serious but stable condition at a Chicago-area hospital, a hospital official said today.

Her illness "is not life-threatening," but no other details were available, according to a spokeswoman for St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, Ill., just north of Chicago.

The Chicago Tribune reported that 75-year-old Harris failed to show up for a weekend performance of Fossils at the Victory Gardens Theater and that staff members had found her semiconscious in her apartment.

She appeared in the play Friday night but failed to make Saturday's curtain, the newspaper said. She was scheduled for a run through July 1.

Harris' stage career spans more than half a century. She won her first Tony for 1952's I Am a Camera and her most recent one for 1977's The Belle of Amherst, a one-woman show about poet Emily Dickinson.
