LONDON, Nov. 7, 2007 — -- Only days after narrowly escaping a prison sentence, British singer and renowned bad boy Pete Doherty may finally have to face the music.

A cell phone video posted on The Sun newspaper's Web site allegedly shows Doherty, Kate Moss' ex-boyfriend, shooting up heroin in his home in Wiltshire, England, just hours after flying home from the MTV European Music Awards.

The 28-year-old rock star has bounced around drug rehabilitation facilities the last couple years and has been jailed for drug possession and burglary, but more recently he has publicly touted his newfound sobriety. The relapse, if it turns out to be legitimate, could mean jail time for the singer, who was told by a court last week to stay clean or face the consequences.

The Sun's graphic video shows a man strongly resembling the singer, crouching on the floor and "cooking" a dose of heroin in a spoon. He then injects himself in the arm with a syringe.

Doherty's manager, Adrian Hunter, told ABC News that "legal matters" prevented him from commenting on the video. However, the man in the video is wearing the same black polo and green backstage bracelet Doherty was photographed wearing leaving the airport earlier that day. Doherty was returning from Germany, where he performed songs from his new album, "Shotter's Nation," at the MTV European Music Awards.

In a written statement issued by his record label EMI earlier today, Doherty said he had relapsed and would check into rehab in order to "try to continue the hitherto excellent attempts he had made to break free of heroin." He apologized for what he called "a stupid, stupid action for which I feel only shame."

The Sun, which has called for Doherty's incarceration in its pages, gave copies of the video to the police this afternoon. Inspector David McMullin, of Wiltshire Police, told ABC News that if it is proven that Doherty committed a criminal offence, "he would be asked to account for his action."

The singer, who was released from a court-ordered rehab center two weeks ago, had confessed to NME magazine that staying off the drug was "hard work." In an interview given a just one day before the video was reportedly shot, Doherty said: "I know it's a bit sad, but I'm in mourning. I'm in mourning for an armful."

Doherty, who went to prison in 2003 for burglary, was given a suspended jail sentence 11 days ago for illegal possession of crack cocaine, heroin, ketamine and cannabis. Handing him his sentence, District Judge Davinder Lachhar praised the rocker, saying he had "made strides" after he had tested negative for drugs for six weeks in a row. Lachhar had warned Doherty in August to quit the drugs or face consequences.
