— -- Thomas Gibson admitted he would have done things differently on the set of "Criminal Minds," but said he didn't deserve to be fired after 12 years on the show.

"If I had the chance to do some things differently, I might. But there is a context to each of these incidents and I think that they don't add up to what ended up happening," Gibson told People magazine.

Last month, ABC Studios and CBS Studios, the production companies behind the CBS drama, confirmed the actor's dismissal, adding in a statement, "Creative details for how the character's exit ... will be announced at a later date."

Gibson released his own statement saying, "There were creative differences on the set and a disagreement. I regret that it occurred. We all want to work together as a team to make the best show possible. We always have and we always will."

The actor is moving on but not before setting the record straight about his working relationship with former co-star Shemar Moore.

"Shemar and I did have disagreements early on. People work differently and have different priorities, but we are like brothers and worked through it," Gibson, 54, told People. "I was so happy to direct the three-episode arc that was written to send him off, with hugs and kisses [at the end of last season]."

Since his firing, Gibson has enjoyed spending time with his three children but is eager to get back to work.

"I just need more opportunities to do good work and be a good guy," he said.
