The search for the next "American idol" kicks off tonight. Contestants singing their hearts out hoping to impress Katy, Luke and Lionel. For a ticket to Hollywood. ABC's Adrienne Bankert has more. You're going to Hollywood! Reporter: Season three of "American idol" is back and bigger than ever. Reporter: Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan return and tell me just how much it means to mentor America's next major music star. And life is like a song This is not just a job, this is like a passion and we felt it. This is where we get to take all of what we've learned and like give these kids some kind of shortcuts. Reporter: From across the country, the contenders include Doug, a garbageman with no vocal and from Kansas -- Reporter: And Sam from Harlem. And we will rise Lot of times we have to point out to them you're the star. And kind of like be the first people to ever say that they are enough. It baffles me that some of these kids will come in so raw, beautifully talented, and no one has ever told them. Their star is starting to rise because their confidence is starting to rise. I came in as dad. I didn't realize that. But I found out so many of them hadn't that experience. What have you learned about yourself? I have learned, they inspire us to come back and practice what we preach. It reminds me to, look, there was no music business first. It was always the music. Reporter: For "Good morning America," Adrienne Bankert, ABC news, Los Angeles. And you can catch the two-hour season premiere tonight at 8:00 right here on ABC and catch "Nightline's" talk with the judges tomorrow night right here as well.
