Transcript for Minneapolis school fighting food insecurity with fresh meals
we have now an inspiring story about the efforts in Minneapolis to keep every child fed with healthy meals all week long even as they study at home. Hunger does not take a vacation. Hunger doesn't know there's weekends, holidays or there's a summer. When a school shuts down and no meals are provided, you're really increasing the struggle for so many families to figure out where the next meal is going to come from. I have worked with Minneapolis public schools since January 2012, I realized that food insecurity was a big issue when I first entered the school food environment. Over 54% of our students rely on free and reduce meals for their daily nutrition. And it's something that I think the public isn't aware of, it's a crisis, so we've been doing meal boxes now since the end of March. What we saw within our community, in the aftermath of George Floyd and even earlier with the onset of covid, is an increase need for healthy meals in different areas of the city that in the past had not been impacted. The usda extended our ability to provide free meals to entire communities through the waiver that has now been extended through the entire school year. Right now, we're serving 100% of our community with free meals. Approximately, between 12,000 and 17,000 families per week. Families now can pick up a seven-day meal box five days a week at 29 sites across the state. Each of our boxes contain seven breakfasts and seven lunches which is the meals for one student. So a family of three would pick up three boxes. There will always be fresh fruits, fresh vegetables and the entree as well as breakfast item, milk and juice. We have amazing people making, cooking, assembling those boxes for us they're truly unsung heroes. People don't realize they're doing this work on a daily basis. Knowing that we can provide healthy, quality, nutritious meals across the entire city has been amazing. The stories with get is more notes of gratitude of what we're doing to the community and how grateful the community is for our program and also grateful for our staff. Beautiful story. Thank you for that.
