Nov. 28, 2011— -- Are you having guests over for the holidays?

Protecting your furniture and carpet during the holidays can be a daunting challenge.

In carpeted homes, up to 80 percent of the dust and dirt that is tracked in by your guests could end up in your upholstered furniture and carpet.

Your first line of defense, better known as your "welcome" mat, cannot fully protect your home from all the unwanted dust and dirt. However, replacing them often will prevent these mats from becoming traps for soil.

Another preventative step is to vacuum 2-3 times a week, especially carpet that is in high traffic lanes. In addition, relocating furniture will cause a shift in traffic patterns and provide some relief to the carpet area that experiences a higher volume.

Taking steps to clean your upholstered furniture and carpet from tiny soil particles is the smartest way to have your home looking its best!
