You said paris hilton was probably the worst person you could have dated at that time. I'm just a boy toy. Don't get me wrong. Honestly, I was under the influence a lot during that relationship. Reporter:33-year-old carter says his drug and alcohol abuse were so severe, it caused changes to his brain. I was self-medicating. You talk about hydrocodones, vicodins. Reporter: Carter says his problems stem back to the emotional and mental abuse he suffered as a child. Stop it. Reporter: His family dysfunction playing out in the 2006 reality show, "house of carters." That's what it was. There was no thought behind it. Put as much people in the house that have issues and let them explode. Reporter: Carter says he finally turned his life around, after he was diagnosed with a heart condition. The swelling of your heart muscle, due to the toxins, the buildup of toxins in your heart. Reporter: Because of the drugs and alcohol and the hard lifestyle. Yes.
