with that fiery, high-anxiety, near disaster overnight. A flight takes over from newark. When fireballs start shooting out of the engine. We have the very latest. John, good morning to you. Reporter: This was aer the fieing ordeal not only for passengers but witnesses onboard. As that plane stayed in the air for more than two hours. It landed safely here at the airport. On the ground, firefighters raced to the scene. In the air, hours of horror. It started just before 6:00 p.M. United flight 96 was taking off from newark when suddenly, according to reports a tire burst and debris was sucked into one of the plane's engine. As it was elevating, i noticed that there was a flame spitting out of the left engine. I ran to the window. Looked outside. Saw the airplane and saw fire coming out. The boeing 757 was headed to berlin but immediately turned around back for newark. In this cell phone video, you can see the plane circling. This is be kwiept disturbing if you're sitting in the cabinet and not going on. It's shooting what looks like fire balls out of the front of the engine. Reporter: The plane circled burning off fuel. The plane looped around newa are, k over and over. Finally the plane made an emergency landing. This is one of those emergencies that pilots train for all the time. This crew did a terrific job handling this emergency tonight. Once again, no reports of any injuries for all 173 crew members and passengers onboard. Once that flight landed here safely at newark, passengers were put on another flight for berlin. Just to clarify, did the plane land with just one engine, john? Well, dan, the faa said that the engine was functioning normally once that plane landed.
