Aug. 24, 2009— -- Question: What complications should I be looking out for when I wear contact lenses? (dry eyes, allergic reactions, inflammation, scratchy eyes)

Answer: Well, contact lenses are medical devices, and as such they can actually cause very serious complications, including things like blinding infections of the eye. Thankfully, this is very uncommon. But the general rule is, if you have any discomfort, redness, reduced vision, you should remove your contact lenses and seek care with your eye care provider as quickly as possible. If your eyes are red or uncomfortable, you really should not wear your contact lenses, and it's important to seek care as soon as possible to help treat and hopefully prevent any serious conditions, such as infections.
