— -- Question: What dietary considerations (such as salt, or sodium) are important in treating heart failure?

Answer: The most important thing for patients with heart failure is to limit their salt intake. Patients take water pills or diuretics to increase urination, but it is probably much healthier to just have less sodium in your diet. Sodium is really everywhere. People have to be very careful, not only about obviously salty foods, but also about canned vegetables, prepared sauces and even preparations that may say "light salt" but may actually have a lot of sodium in them.
