July 1, 2009— -- Question: What are some important things to keep in mind when I'm looking for a primary care doctor, and should a man consider a urologist?

Answer: Well, I think the most important thing to keep in mind is that you need to be comfortable with whoever doctor that you choose. You are going to be sharing very personal information with the doctor, and you need to feel comfortable with him or her if you're going to follow their advice.

There are a variety of ways that you can choose a primary care doctor, but I would definitely choose one who is board certified, either in family practice or internal medicine, because that means that they have kept up with the latest educational standards and are required to take certification exams every 7 to 10 years.

In terms of when to find a urologist, I think that most symptoms and cases can be first dealt with with your primary care doctor and if further tests need to be done or procedures need to be performed, then an appropriate recommendation can be made by your primary care doctor to a urologist.
