— -- Sleepless Londoners heard bells tolling nonstop for over 24 hours this week after a church's bells malfunctioned sometime on Monday and left church staff "desperately trying to fix" the unrelenting chiming, according to the Twitter account of St. George the Martyr Church in Southwark, London.

"WHY WON'T IT STOOOOP?!?" the church of St. George the Martyr wrote Tuesday. "After 24hrs of no sleep, our staff are now becoming even more hysterical."

One frustrated London lawyer on Twitter likened the incessant bell ringing to "a weird apocalyptic death knell."

And though the church said the chiming was due to a "technical problem," others had more creative theories.

Despite the barrage of complaints, the church was able to find humor in the situation.

Engineers finally came to the rescue and stopped the "incessant bell ringing" around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The church apologized again for "#bellgate" on a sign on its door Tuesday morning, accompanied by an offer of free food.
