London -- When Britain's oldest skate park was threatened by developers and due to be demolished, a community of skateboarders fought back.

After a 17-month long campaign against the Southbank Center's expansion plans and collecting more than 27,000 signatures, the skaters won their right to stay.

Even London Mayor Boris Johnson weighed in, saying: "The skate park is the epicenter of U.K. skateboarding and is part of the cultural fabric of London. This much-loved community space has been used by thousands of young people over the years. It attracts tourists from across the world and undoubtedly adds to the vibrancy of the area -- it helps to make London the great city it is."

For many skateboarders, like Rohan Manderson, 16, the park is a safe space for people from all backgrounds to have fun and relax. It's a unique location, along the river Thames, where many tourists stop by to watch.

Southbank skate park, also called The Undercroft, opened in 1976.
