Israel-Gaza updates: Houthis claim 'hypersonic' missile attack on Israel

Around 40 "projectiles" crossed into Israel from Lebanon on Sunday morning, the Israel Defense Forces said.

"Some of the projectiles were intercepted and the rest fell in open areas," the IDF said in a statement. "No injuries were reported. Israel Fire and Rescue Services are currently operating to extinguish fires that were caused by fallen projectiles in open areas."

"Simultaneously, an explosive UAV was identified crossing from Lebanese territory," which fell near the northern border town of Metula, the IDF said. "No damage was caused in the area of the community and no injuries were reported."

Israeli jets and artillery units attacked "several areas" in southern Lebanon overnight, the IDF added.

Sirens sounded in central Israel on Sunday morning due to a reported missile attack from Yemen, the Israel Defense Forces said.

"A surface-to-surface missile was identified crossing into central Israel from the east and fell in an open area," the IDF said in a statement. "No injuries were reported."

The IDF confirmed to ABC News that the Houthi missile was not intercepted by Israeli air defense systems.

"The missile was fired from Yemen," the IDF added, attributing the sounds of explosions to interception efforts.

The Magen David Adom -- Israel's emergency services -- said its staff treated and evacuated nine people "in mild condition" who were injured on their way to shelters."

The Yemeni Houthi movement -- considered part of the Iranian-led "Axis of Resistance" -- has launched several long-range missile and drone attacks against Israel in protest of Israel's military operation in Gaza. In July, a Houthi drone detonated in Tel Aviv, killing one person and wounding four others.

A funeral was held Saturday for Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, the American-Turkish woman killed by the Israel Defense Forces in the West Bank last week. The procession took place in the town of Didim, Turkey.

Eygi's coffin was placed in front of the town's main mosque as hundreds of people gathered around it. Her father and husband were behind the imams conducting the funeral prayer.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East said an employee was killed by the Israel Defense Forces in the West Bank, marking the first time a member of its staff has been killed there in 10 years.

"Sufyan Jaber Abed Jawwad was shot and killed on the roof of his home by a sniper during an overnight Israeli military operation in the early morning of 12 September. Sufyan worked as a sanitation labourer in El Far’a Camp and is survived by his wife and five children," UNRWA said in a statement Friday.

"Civilian infrastructure, including water and electricity networks, have been destroyed, with precarious access for communities to basic supplies. UNRWA has been forced to suspend services to refugees because of the unacceptable risk to staff and beneficiaries during these operations," the UNRWA said.
