— -- Rescuers came across an unexpected sight while scouring the rubble in the quake-ravaged town of Norcia, just 3 miles from the epicenter of a 6.6 magnitude temblor that rocked central Italy on Sunday.

Flashlights on Tuesday night brightened the darkness to reveal the head of a small puppy poking out of the rubble and yelping.

Team members from the national fire and rescue service combing the town were alerted to the pup's presence by his yelping and were guided to his location by their own dog, trained to sniff out survivors who can't be seen or heard from the tops of mounds of debris that were once large buildings.

The pup, Ulysses, was checked out by a veterinarian from Italy's National Animal Protection Agency and is said to have come out of the ordeal remarkably well, with no fractures or other major injuries.
