How to Pull Off the Pastel-Colored Hair Craze
Celebs are doing it, so why can't you?
— -- Pastel-colored hair is the summer-friendly trend taking Hollywood by storm.
Celebrities from Katy Perry to Kelly Ripa to Nicole Richie and Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting have all turned their ponytails pastel, so why can't you?
With the beauty trend in the headlines, tutorials are popping up everywhere online, offering a chance for everyday people to jump on the trend.
Celebrity colorist Rita Hazan, owner of the Rita Hazan Salon, says she turned Katy Perry's locks pink, purple and blue three years ago, and has watched pastel and multicolored hair grow in popularity ever since.
"It's so fun to see that it's now mainstream and it's OK to go to the office with, like, pink hair," Hazan told "Good Morning America."
Hazan's advice for those willing to have fun with the trend is to be willing to commit to it, especially if you're going for a head full of pink hair.
"Before you go any of these pop colors, these pastel colors, you have to bleach out your hair," the New York City-based colorist said. "So you have to be like the palest you can."
"This works for people with really light hair," Hazan continued. "This is a total commitment but a fun commitment."
It's a total commitment if you go with permanent dye, but as hair stylist Jackson Backe explained on "Good Morning America," there are ways to get the trend in a less permanent way.
"Demi-permanent hair color will last about 28 shampoos, so it's not like a tattoo. [Or] a direct dye ... stains the hair and will last about 10 shampoos," he said. "Both don't damage the hair at all."
For those who do take the full plunge, there are ways to keep your hair glossy.
"When you pre-lighten the hair you might feel a little texture change," Backe said. "But using something like color-protecting shampoo and conditioner are going to be amazing for keeping it soft and shiny."
