Shop Smart on Labor Day Sales: Buy This, Not That
Appliances and summer clothing have some of the biggest discounts.
— -- Labor Day is a great end-of-summer time for barbecues and that last trip to the beach, but it’s also one of the biggest sales weekends of the year.
“Good Morning America” consumer correspondent Becky Worley reveals what’s discounted this weekend and what you should wait to buy.
“The economy is preforming well,” Worley said. “Retailers aren't desperate to move excess inventory, but on big shopping weekends they feel compelled to stay competitive with other retailers.
“The good news? Sales are equally available online and most sales have already started today.”
Best Categories for Deals
Appliances:
Best Buy, Lowes, Home Depot and Sears are slashing prices in the realm of 30 to 35 percent. You should only buy fridges, dishwashers or washing machines on these big holiday sales weekends.
Also, Home Depot has a paint sale that’s hard to beat: $23 for a can of Behr house paint, plus they have a mail-in rebate offer for $10 off each can, which comes to a total of only $13 a can.
Summer clothing:
Banana Republic has $40 off everything.
J. Crew has 30 percent, with its factory store at 50 percent off.
Old Navy is offering 50 percent off on all jeans, tees and dresses.
Carter’s is giving 50 percent off most items.
Amazon Fashion is advertising lots of items at 70 percent off.
Airline tickets:
Buy now! Worley said this is the last opportunity to buy the cheapest fares before Thanksgiving and holiday travel.
Cars:
Haggle like a pro! Worley said we’re moving into the end-of-the-year crunch for dealerships where they have to get rid of 2016 inventory.
Wait to Buy
Phones:
Do not buy! Worley said Apple is announcing new products next week, which means prices will go down on previous generation products.
Grills:
This one is tricky. Savings this weekend across almost all grills are around 20 to 40 percent. Inventory will get slim in October, but the discounts will be deeper at 50 to 60 percent.
