— -- Lucas Holliday, the Dollar General cashier who went super viral for singing Maxwell's "Ascension" while checking out a customer, got the chance of a lifetime to perform with the R&B singer Friday night.

Holliday, 26, who is known in the store for singing while he works, was caught on camera singing Maxwell's hit 1996 single. That video racked up a staggering 500 million views and it led to Maxwell inviting him onstage.

It all came to fruition Friday night, while the singer's tour stopped in Detroit. The two met and even got to rehearse together at soundcheck before their big duet.

"Getting onstage is one thing -- I love the stage -- but just being on this stage ... it's just the magnitude of that is kind of mind boggling," Holliday said before his performance.

"It's kind of a godsend to me because I was going through a lot of stuff myself recently," the Lansing, Michigan, man continued. "Life was getting down on me a little bit and then all of a sudden this crazy thing happened."

Dressed in an all black suit and T-shirt, Holliday took the stage like a pro. Even Maxwell seemed to enjoy Holliday's rendition of his own song, pulling out his cell phone to capture the moment.

"I'm forever grateful," Holliday said after he left the stage. "Whatever happens from here on out, I'm forever grateful for this moment."
