Mysterious "gnome homes," like the one pictured here, have been popping up in Overland Park, Kansas.

"There's actually three and we've been hearing from local citizens that they've seen more pop up," Chelsey Gordon of the City of Overland's management office told ABCNews.com.

A note posted on one of the gnome homes: "Thank you for your recent correspondence. Regarding your request to meet today, I am sad to report that I will be out of the tree and will not be available. However, I have set the table for tea and do hope that you will enjoy it in my absence. Best Regards, R.L."

The purple-doored gnome home has a tea set inside on a tiny table and a welcome mat outside the door.

The gnome home neighborhood has taken on the nickname of "Firefly Forest."

"They're great," Gordon said of the pop-up homes. "It's something that I think our citizens are really appreciating, just something nice and cute to look at as they walk around the trails."

A mini American flag hangs outside a particularly patriotic gnome home.

"It's just something for [residents] to get excited about, interested about, take their kids out to see," Gordon said. "We're loving it. We're having a lot of fun looking and trying to find more."

"We have no idea," Gordon said when asked if officials knew who was responsible for the gnome homes. "Nobody has come forward to say, 'Oh, we're the ones doing this.' As far as we can tell, it's a mystery."
