— -- An ex-Marine took home the top prize last weekend at what was billed as the first-ever Christmas tree throwing competition in the U.K.

A 26-year-old named Owen Davis beat out around 100 other competitors at Keele Christmas Tree Farm in Staffordshire, England, by throwing a 22-pound Christmas tree nearly 27 feet long and 22 feet in the air, according to the farm.

Along with the title of Christmas tree throwing champion, Davis, who is now studying medicine, took home a trophy, £100, and a bottle of champagne.

Competitors each had three attempts at the “long throw” and three attempts at the “high throw,” with their totals combined together to determine their rank.

Around 1,500 people came to Keele Farm during the two-day event, according to the farm.

The tree-throwing competition was organized by 19-year-old Charlie Reynolds to benefit the Help for Heroes charity, raising nearly $600 in all.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled with how keen our visitors were,” Reynolds told local newspaper The Sentinel.
