The "Nightline" panel "Face-Off: Does God Have a Future?" took place at the Beekman Auditorium at the California Institute of Technology in Pasedena, before an audience of almost 1,000 people.

Dan Harris led "Nightline"'s sixth "Face-Off," which asked, "Does God Have a Future?" Panelists addressed and debated questions about the changing status of spiritual belief in contemporary society: Are we now at a time in history when arguments about God can be settled? Given all that we know today about the cosmos and life on Earth, is science killing God -- or can it bring us closer to God?

Michael Shermer, right, is a former fundamentalist Christian turned anti-religious skeptic. His chosen "Face-Off" partner was Sam Harris, one of the most outspoken and controversial American atheists and author of the best-selling book "The End of Faith."

Elliot, an audience member from Jamaica, told the "Face-Off" panel that he used spiritual methods to heal himself of an illness that had lasted for four years.

Shermer, left, put Chopra, right, on the cover of "Skeptic," the magazine he runs. The cover story called Chopra "Dr. Woo Woo" -- Shermer's term for those he considers purveyors of junk science.

Chopra believes in the soul, the afterlife and an intelligence at the heart of the universe. Chopra goes further: He says that there is scientific evidence undergirding his spiritual beliefs.

"Things that God used to explain are now explained through natural forces," Shermer said. "Belief in God and the kind of God you believe in and the sort of religion you adhere to depend very much on where you happen to have been born and in which century you happen to be born."

While the sixth "Face-Off" debate may have ended on stage, the participants -- and members of the audience -- have continued to discuss changing spiritual beliefs over e-mail and online.
