— -- Illinois holds its Democratic and Republican primaries on March 15, 2016. 182 delegates are at stake for the Democrats and 69 delegates for the Republicans.

Why the state is significant:

  • Illinois has 20 electoral votes -- more than any other Midwestern state.
  • The state was home to current President Barack Obama and is the place that launched his political career. The Land of Lincoln has voted Democratic in every presidential election since 1992.
  • Fast facts:

  • In the 2008 Democratic presidential primary, then Illinois Sen. Barack Obama beat Hillary Clinton by over 650,000 votes.
  • Though the primary will be held on Mar. 15, Illinois resident have been able to vote early at locations around the state since Feb. 29 and at one location in Chicago since Feb. 17.
