Speaker Mike Johnson on Trump's Qatari plane flap: 'Not in my lane'
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., deflected questions surrounding the Qatari jet gift, saying it's "not my lane" and leaving the ethics of accepting the gift to the White House.
"Look, I have been a little busy on reconciliation. I am not following all the twists and turns of the Qatar jet," he said during a press conference Wednesday morning. "My understanding is that it's not a personal gift to the president. It's a gift to the United States, and other nations give us gifts all the time, but I am going to leave it to the administration. They know much more about the details, OK? It's not my lane."
Pressed by a reporter if the speaker has concerns with Trump's business dealings in the Middle East, Johnson sidestepped the question and said, "There are authorities that police executive branch, ethics rules. I'm not an expert."
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson responds to a question during a press conference to highlight House Republican efforts to work through the 2026 White House budget request on Capitol Hill in Washington, May 14, 2025.
On Tuesday evening, Johnson similarly deferred all decisions to the president.
"I think the president would agree that we've got to do a careful check for security concerns, but beyond that, it's his decision," Johnson said.
Johnson, who helped oversee a failed impeachment inquiry into former President Joe Biden over accusations of foreign influence-peddling and corrupt family practices, told reporters Wednesday that Trump is different because everything is "out in the open."
"I'll say that our -- the reason that many people refer to the Bidens as the Biden crime family is because they were doing all this stuff behind curtains, but in the back rooms, they were trying to conceal it and they repeatedly lied about it and they set up shell companies, and the family was all engaged in getting all on the dole," Johnson said. "Whatever the President Trump is doing is out in the open. They are not trying to conceal anything."
