Trump admin live updates: Trump says Musk will 'pay the consequences' if he funds Democrats

President Donald Trump was asked again on Thursday when he will make a decision regarding sanctions on Russia, which he's threatened repeatedly over the past several weeks.

"It's in my brain, the deadline," Trump said. "When I see the moment where it's not gonna stop ... we'll be very, very tough. And it could be on both countries, to be honest. It takes two to tango."

Trump also discussed his phone call on Wednesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying he compared the Russia-Ukraine war to two boys who hate each other "fighting in a park" and whether it is best to break them up or let them fight.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stressed America's role in ending the conflict between Ukraine and Russia on Thursday during his meeting with President Donald Trump.

"America is again in a very strong position to do something on this war and ending this war. So let's talk about what we can do jointly and we are ready to do what we can and you know that we gave support to Ukraine and that we are looking for more pressure on Russia. The European Union did and we should talk about that," he said.

Trump said he would "talk about that," and then pivoted to the latest Army recruitment numbers.

Musk used Trump's own past words against him, seeming to imply hypocrisy.

In one post, which Musk has now pinned to the top of his X account, Musk quoted a 2013 post from Trump criticizing Republicans for extending the debt ceiling, with Musk writing, "Wise words."

Musk then shared another Trump post from 2012 where Trump wrote, "no member of Congress should be eligible for re-election if our country's budget is not balanced," with Musk adding, "I couldn't agree more."

President Donald Trump was asked on Thursday about Elon Musk's relentless criticism of his massive tax and immigration bill. Musk argues the bill would undermine the goal of DOGE to cut government spending and reduce the deficit.

"He hasn't said anything about me that's bad. I'd rather have him criticize me than the bill," Trump said. "Because the bill is incredible."

Trump went on to claim Musk was "upset" because electric vehicle mandates are not in the legislation.

"Remember, he was here for a long time. You saw a man who was very happy when he stood behind the Oval desk and even with the black eye. I said, 'Do you want a little makeup? We'll get you a little makeup.' But he said, 'No, I don't think so,' which was interesting and very nice, he wants to be who he is. So you could make that statement too, I guess."

"Look, Elon and I had a great relationship. I don't know if we will anymore," Trump said. He went on to say he was "very disappointed" in Musk.
