"World News Tonight with David Muir" is the #1 Evening News Broadcast in Total Viewers for Second Week

ABC News’  “World News Tonight with David Muir” ranked No. 1 in Total Viewers (9.772 million) for the week of January 4, 2016, based on Live +Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research.  Beating “NBC Nightly News” (9.687 million) by 85,000 to lead for the 2nd week in a row, “World News Tonight” turned in its first back-to-back Total Viewer wins in over 8 months – since weeks of 4/13/15 and 4/20/15.   

Season to date, “World News Tonight” is improving versus the same point last season in Total Viewers (+1% - 8.668 million vs. 8.607 million).  Growing for the 5th straight year, “World News Tonight” is delivering its largest overall viewer audience in 11 years – since the 2004-05 season.

In addition, “World News Tonight” is narrowing its Total Viewer season margin with “NBC Nightly News” by more than half (-54% - 294,000 vs. 641,000), posting its closest overall viewer performance with the NBC program in 8 years – since the 2007-08 season.  

“World News Tonight” cut its year-to-year margins with “NBC Nightly News” in both Adults 25-54 (-11% - 225,000 vs. 252,000) and Adults 18-49 (-9% - 242,000 vs. 267,000).

Growing in Total Viewers (+1% - 9.772 million vs. 9.692 million for w/o 12/28/15) for the 3rd week in a row to hit a new season high, “World News Tonight” drew its largest overall audience in 1 year – since w/o 1/5/15.

For the week, “World News Tonight” led the “CBS Evening News” by 1.566 million Total Viewers, by 212,000 Adults 25-54 and by 177,000 Adults 18-49.
