— -- quicklist: title: India Prime Minister Narendra Modi Hits 'the Garden' text: Controversial Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi drew a large crowd at Madison Square Garden on Sunday that rivaled fans of the New York Knicks, New York Rangers and Billy Joel. Elected in May, Modi made a stop in New York by an invitation of the Indian American Community Foundation before an expected visit to the White House today.

Many in the crowd of nearly 20,000 people, many of whom were Indian American, tweeted #ModiAtMadison.

The reception certainly was better than in 2005, when Modi was denied a diplomatic visa to visit the United States.

The denial came several years after religious riots led to the deaths of more than 1,000 Muslims in the state of Gujarat, where he was chief minister at the time. Modi has denied involvement in the deaths, The Associated Press reported.

This time, now that he's prime minister, Modi has an official invitation from the White House.
