— -- The Arizona Diamondbacks have hired Chip Hale as their manager, the team announced Monday morning.

Hale, 49, replaces manager Kirk Gibson, who was fired with three games remaining this season. The Diamondbacks finished with the worst record in the major leagues at 64-98.

Hale was one of four finalists for the Diamondbacks' manager job, along with former major league manager Jim Tracy, former big leaguer Phil Nevin, who is the manager of Diamondbacks' Triple-A affiliate in Reno, and Sandy Alomar Jr., the bench coach of the Cleveland Indians.

Hale was the bench coach for the Oakland Athletics and manager Bob Melvin this season.

Hale was the third-base and infield coach under Melvin with the Diamondbacks from 2007-09, when the club won the NL West in '07.

A former major league infielder for parts of seven seasons, Hale worked seven seasons as a minor league manager in the Arizona organization.
