— -- Brady Hoke's tumultuous 2014 season as coach at Michigan has ended in his ouster Tuesday, according to ESPN and multiple media reports.

Michigan has called a 4:30 p.m. ET news conference to discuss the state of the football program.

In 2011, his first season in Ann Arbor, Hoke led the Wolverines to an 11-2 record, including a 23-20 overtime win against Virginia Tech in the 2012 Allstate Sugar Bowl, Michigan's first BCS bowl game since the 2006 season.

But after that, Michigan has seen its win total decrease each season -- 8-5 in 2012, 7-6 in 2013 and 5-7 this season.

The turmoil that enveloped the program included Michigan's handling of quarterback Shane Morris when he suffered a head injury during a loss to Minnesota on Sept. 27. Hoke and former athletic director Dave Brandon both received criticism when Morris briefly played on after being involved in a violent collision in the fourth quarter. Morris was eventually diagnosed with a probable concussion.

Brandon, who hired Hoke on Jan. 11, 2011, resigned on Oct. 31 after four years on the job amid public outcry for a new leader. Jim Hackett replaced Brandon on an interim basis.

Hoke, a former standout linebacker at Ball State, previously was the head coach at Ball State (2003-08) and San Diego State (2009-10) before accepting the Wolverines' position.

In a coincidence, Hoke's ouster comes on the same day his reviled predecessor in Ann Arbor, Rich Rodriguez, was announced as the Pac-12 Coach of the Year.
