— -- The Atlanta Braves have traded closer Craig Kimbrel and outfielder  Melvin Upton Jr. to the San Diego Padres.

San Diego will send oft-injured outfielders Carlos Quentin and Cameron Maybin to Atlanta along with prospects Matt Wisler and Jordan Paroubeck, and the 41st pick overall in the upcoming draft.

Kimbrel led the National League in saves last year with 47 and has saved no fewer than 42 games over the past four seasons with the Braves.

The move will reunite Upton with his brother Justin, whom the Padres also acquired from the Braves in a trade this offseason.

Melvin, an 11-year veteran who had gone by B.J. Upton before this season, was sidelined during spring training due to inflammation in his foot, but had been a bust since signing the largest free-agent contract in Braves history.

Entering the third year of a five-year, $75 million deal, Upton had compiled a .198 average in his two seasons in Atlanta and hit a total of 21 homers in that span.

San Diego has completely revamped its outfield this offseason, adding Wil Myers from the Rays, Matt Kemp from the Dodgers and both Uptons from the Braves.

The Braves and Padres open their seasons Monday; Atlanta plays at Miami, while San Diego starts its season at Los Angeles against the Dodgers.
