— -- Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner has entered a diversion program in Goodyear Municipal Court after being arrested on suspicion of assault and disorderly conduct last Wednesday, her attorney said Tuesday.

Griner pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct, but that plea will be set aside while she attends 26 weeks of domestic violence counseling. All charges will be dismissed if she successfully completes counseling, according to her attorney, David Michael Cantor.

"It is never OK for an argument to turn physical," Griner said in a statement released through Cantor. "This will never happen again, and I take my relationship and my responsibility as a role model seriously. I am committed to making positive changes and I plan to use what I have learned to set a good example and help make a difference in the world around me."

Cantor also said Griner began voluntary counseling -- which she will continue -- the day after her arrest, and that she is cooperating with the WNBA's investigation into the incident.

Griner and Tulsa Shock player Glory Johnson  were arrested last Wednesday after an argument in the home they purchased together two days earlier became physical.

The two 24-year-olds were arrested on counts of assault by recklessly causing physical injuries and disorderly conduct for fighting. They were booked into Maricopa County Jail in downtown Phoenix and later released.

Both suffered minor injuries, including a bite mark on Griner's finger, but neither required medical attention.

Griner told police the fight was caused by weeks of stress, including buying a house, planning a wedding and their relationship. The pair announced their engagement late last summer and expected to get married next month.
