Hoyer: Preparing to start vs. Cincy

— -- BEREA, Ohio -- Brian Hoyer said Monday afternoon he hadn't been told whether he or rookie Johnny Manziel would start Sunday against Cincinnati.

Hoyer will prepare the same way he has all year -- as the Cleveland Browns' starter.

"It's [coach Mike Pettine's] decision, and I respect his decision," Hoyer said. "For me, I just have to keep the same mentality. This is about being mentally tough. If anything, I think I've proven I can handle that. I'll keep the same attitude."

Pettine is scheduled to address the local media at 4 p.m.

The Browns gave Hoyer a life raft by not pulling him in favor of Manziel before the Indianapolis Colts game, and he did little with the opportunity, completing 14 of 31 passes for 140 yards and two interceptions. The offense got one first down in its first five series of the second half. The Browns' defense outscored its own offense, 14-10.

Hoyer has orchestrated one touchdown drive in his past 29 series, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Hoyer played well to start the year and led the Browns to a 7-4 record but has struggled mightily the past five games. Hoyer admitted he missed a few passes but also believes he's not alone in the Browns' struggles, adding the offense couldn't find ways to execute when plays broke down.

"If 10 guys do their job and one doesn't, it can really affect a play," Hoyer said about the Browns' recent struggles overall.

Must Hoyer, a free agent after the season, orchestrate an improbable late-season push into the playoffs to keep the Browns job long-term? ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Sunday reported that  Hoyer's days in Cleveland are likely numbered.

To that question, Hoyer highlighted the irony.

"It's crazy how fast things changed," Hoyer said. "I feel like four or five weeks ago we're talking about contract talks. Now we're talking about if I'm even going to be staying here."
